Killing Jesus

Thu, 04/17/2014 - 18:49
One of the books I’ve been able to read during my ongoing recovery from hip surgery has been the fascinating Killing Jesus by Bill O’Reilly. The book’s website says O’Reilly’s latest effort “details the events leading up to the murder of the most influential man in history: Jesus of Nazareth. Killing Jesus will take readers inside Jesus’s life, recounting the seismic political and historical events that made his death inevitable – and changed the world forever.” We’ll get back to O’Reilly’s best-seller in just a bit, but first, the WI chapter of Concerned Women for America has put up an Easter display in the state Capitol in Madison and good for them! Here’s a photo sent to me by the chapter’s director, Kim Simac: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" DefUnhideWhenUsed="true" Repulsive! Offensive! Naturally, the atheists at the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation got their noses out of joint (I laugh) and demanded they put up their own display. My guess is over two billion believers around the world would readily dispute that sign. The mainstream media appears to have a love affair with the FFRF and I’ve never understood why. Whenever a religious holiday arrives, the FFRF crawls out from underneath its ugly rock and blasts away and the media laps it up in a rather disproportionate manner. I liken it to the times when Ronald Reagan or one of the Bush presidents would visit Wisconsin and appear before thousands of supporters. Outside there’d be about two dozen protesters. And yet the TV coverage would be 50-50, president vs, opponents. It also seems the only “religion” the FFRF goes after with any hateful aggression is Christianity. I repeat, I laugh. Every time the FFRF speaks, their foolishness damages their cause. Back to Bill O’Reilly’s book. I highly recommend. It was the subject of a “60 Minutes” segment.

PETER PAN Takes Flight Friday Night on Your PBS Station!

Thu, 04/17/2014 - 18:00
Worth Your While! PETER PAN from MILWAUKEE BALLET on PBS Friday Night - 9 pm ET/8 pm CT I don't think I've ever done this before with my own e-mail list (which you happen to be on!), but I do want you to know about a production from our station, Milwaukee Public Television, that will be on YOUR PBS station tomorrow, Friday night, April 18. It's the classic Peter Pan tale told with original choreography and music by Milwaukee Ballet -- and you will find it delightful, accessible, and engaging, even if you're not a ballet fan. It's a treat for the whole family: all the characters you remember are part of the story -- Tinkerbell, Tiger Lilly, Captain Hook, the Lost Boys, even Nana the Dog -- and yes, Peter Pan and the Darling children really do fly! I'm particularly excited that PBS has placed the program on its national primetime schedule -- so whether you're in Milwaukee (on WMVS) or Champaign (on WILL) or Phoenix (on KAET) or New York (on WNET) or Madison (on WHA) or Nashville (on WNPT) or Tallahassee (on WFSU) or Jacksonville (on WJCT) or Washington (on WETA) or Boston (on WGBH) or Columbia (on WRLK) or Los Angeles (on KOCE) or Chicago (on WTTW) or Charleston (on WITV), or Philadelphia (on WHYY) or Pittsburgh (on WQED) or Binghamton (on WSKG) or Cookeville (WCTE) or Las Cruces (on KRWG) or Green Bay (on WPNE) or Bozeman (on KUSM) or Springfield (on WSEC) or New Orleans (on WYES) or Baton Rouge (on WLPB) or Indianapolis (on WFYI) or Durham (on WENH) or Rochester (on WXXI) or Syracuse (on WCNY) or Fort Wayne (on WFWA) or wherever you happen to be Friday night, please tune in to your local PBS station to see some TV really worth watching. (Check local listings for repeat or alternate broadcast dates.) The Huffington Post has this to say about Marc Petrocci, who plays Peter Pan: "Petrocci may well become a household name as of April 18th when Milwaukee Ballet's high-octane PETER PAN will be broadcast on national public television, with Petrocci in the title role." To go backstage for a preview of the program -- and how they gave the dancers flight, click here: http://youtu.be/haI8oVdxh0Y. Teachers should note that there is an online study guide for PETER PAN FROM MILWAUKEE BALLET: http://www.milwaukeeballet.org/sites/default/files/Peter%20Pan%20Study%20Guide%20MPTV%20reduced.pdf. The show was a hit during runs in Denver and here in Milwaukee, and now the whole country will get to see the magic through the reach of PBS. We say that public TV is "America's Greatest Stage," and PETER PAN FROM MILWAUKEE BALLET is proof positive of that. Please join us for this special broadcast next Friday on YOUR PBS station -- and tell your friends and neighbors to watch, too! And a personal wish for a happy Easter and joyous Passover to all my friends! -Ellis Ellis Bromberg General Manager Milwaukee Public Television 1036 N. 8th Street Milwaukee, WI 53233 - a viewer supported service of Milwaukee Area Technical College - 414-271-1036 | fax 414-297-8658 brombere@matc.edu www.mptv.org

Don't overlook an important intangible in the Franklin stadium debate

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 18:45

For a time it seemed as though recent talk about a minor league baseball stadium being built in Franklin was just that…talk. The naysayers, as usual, surfaced early. And the hint of any city property taxes being used to fund the project appeared to be, not just a strike, but a third strike. The developer immediately locked in Oak Creek as a Plan B in case the Franklin plan would suffer a quick death. However, the idea of a potential Franklin site isn’t dead yet as the city has provided a spark of momentum with a Memorandum Of Understanding between Franklin and the developer that will be the subject of a public information hearing Thursday night. I urge interested Franklin residents to look at the lengthy (133 pages) Draft Franklin Baseball Stadium Market Feasibility Study that was submitted to the Franklin Stadium Task Force on March 21, 2014. The draft was compiled by Johnson Consulting. Egg Day at the Milwaukee County Zoo

Egg Day

The following is a public service announcement from This Just In...

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 16:00
Because Jennifer and I do weekly culinary blogs (that will be on hiatus this Sunday), we receive various notices from some very nice places. If you're trying to make Easter reservations at this late date, you're probably out of luck. But this locale has openings (I tried to reserve online and found some openings). You'd better hurry. v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);}

A wounded hero needs meals this Easter

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 23:00
You've given generously to help our troops who have been severely disabled in the war on terror. And today I'd like to share a thank you note we received from Wayne, a wounded hero who received help providing his family with meals over Easter weekend last year, thanks to faithful friends like you. "When I received your Easter check for $60 I broke down in tears," wrote Wayne, a retired Marine. "I am so thankful that you did that for me and my family. We really needed it more than you could ever imagine." Please help rescue more wounded warriors like Wayne who are struggling to feed their children this Easter, Kevin. I'm Major General John K. Singlaub, U.S. Army (Ret.), national spokesman for your Coalition to Salute America's Heroes. As you may recall from my previous messages, the Coalition is trying to rush $60 to help our struggling military families buy meals over Easter weekend. Easter is just days away (April 20), and we don't have much time. So please help right now with the most generous, tax-deductible gift you can afford to the Coalition's Emergency Easter Meals Project. A tax-deductible Easter gift of $60 can help provide the money to put an Easter ham or turkey with all the trimmings on the table for the family of a severely wounded serviceman or woman. This Easter we're trying to help disabled troops like retired Army Staff Sgt. Jason Gilbert. While serving in Afghanistan Jason was hit by a roadside bomb. Jason was rushed to a hospital in Germany, but refused to go home and insisted on being sent back into combat in Afghanistan. Soon he was hit a second time, and suffered wounds almost too painful to imagine: broken bones in his legs, arms and back. . . facial fractures . . . teeth knocked out . . . and a traumatic brain injury. The wounded hero's wife told us, "He's been struggling to find a job because of his disabilities. . . . We have three children so we have to take care of their needs, and grocery store prices are always going up." For you and me, rising grocery prices are an aggravation. But for Jason and his wife the high cost of cereal, milk, cheese, bread, peanut butter and other staples can make it impossible to feed their three children. Please, don't let that happen. You can be a hero to a wounded hero right now by helping to provide them with meals over Easter weekend. Fortunately, the Coalition's family of supporters provided Jason with emergency financial aid. But in the next few days (between now and Easter Sunday) the Coalition's phone will ring many times . . . and on the other end will be the voice of another desperate, frightened hero pleading for help. I don't want to turn away even one severely injured marine, soldier, sailor or airman like Jason, who is physically unable to feed his children . . . because of the wounds suffered while protecting your children (and mine) from terrorism. I know you feel the same way, because you've already made a financial sacrifice of your own to help wounded warriors like Jason. Remember, Easter is right around the corner - April 20 - and we'll need a few days to collect donations, determine how many military families we can help this Easter and put their $60 gifts into the mail. So please make your tax-deductible Easter meals gift of $60 or whatever you can afford right now. And I am deeply grateful for all you've already done for our wounded heroes, who have suffered painful, lifelong injuries . . . so you and I wouldn't have to. Sincerely, Major General John K. Singlaub U.S. Army (Ret.) P.S. As a retired Army General who commanded troops during three wars I can tell you our troops are tough as nails. Yet you've just read a thank you letter from a wounded marine who was so grateful for the $60 he got for meals last Easter that he broke down and cried. Yes, Wayne's letter is deeply moving. But I shared it with you to illustrate a very important point: Your kindness is making a profound difference to our troops and veterans severely disabled in the war on terror. Thank you in advance for your generous help! And remember your tax-deductible Easter gift of $60 can help provide money for Easter dinner for a severely disabled military hero and his family. Your donation of $120 can help feed TWO financially strapped military families, $180 can help feed THREE wounded warriors and their families, and so on. It's all part of the Emergency Easter Meals Project, sponsored by the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes.

A new lineup takes control at Franklin City Hall

As people in the audience quietly and anxiously waited for tonight’s Franklin Common Council to officially begin in a matter of minutes, Franklin’s new mayor Steve Olson (who actually took office at midnight) broke the ice with humor. “I apologize for the glare” coming from the front of the chambers where he was seated. When the meeting did start, Olson got serious, thanking those who voted for him. And those who didn’t? “I will work hard to earn your trust.” Shortly after his comments, Olson took the official oath of office along with Alderwomen Kristen Wilhelm, Janet Evans, and Susanne Mayer. Mayer’s children presented her with a floral bouquet. During the regular citizen comment period that is conducted at the beginning of each Common Council meeting, passionate watchdog and observer of Franklin politics Orville Seymer said, “I always felt confident the city was in good hands,” and he expressed the same confidence in the current group of city leaders. Mayor Olson then presented former mayor Tom Taylor who served for nine years in the post with a special proclamation. With the new lineup representing the city, Taylor said, “Franklin has an extremely bright future.” Taylor received a standing ovation. Another proclamation was to be given to outgoing alderman Steve Taylor, but he could not attend due to a family issue. Votes were then taken on a litany of appointments to aldermen to specific committees or commission, a rather tedious but still important business matter. Prior to the votes, Olson cautioned the audience that this would be, in all honesty, "boring" and if anyone wanted to get up and leave, it would be understood. All of the votes were approved, and then came the newsworthy item. Olson announced that there was a reason all the votes went so smoothly. Aldermen were asked prior to the meeting which committees and commissions they'd prefer to sit on, and lo and behold, they all got they wanted. Ideally, having worked in and/or covered local and state politics since 1978, this is the correct route to go. The aldermen then elected their Council President. Kristen Wilhelm and Dan Mayer were both nominated. Mayor Olson, who does not vote, said “I will be happy to work with either nominee.” A secret ballot was taken with Wilhelm winning, 4-2. In a recent blog I suggested Wilhelm, the most senior member of the Common Council could be the next Council President who essentially becomes vice-mayor when the mayor is out of town. “I travel a lot so this will not be a ceremonial position,” said Mayor Olson. Here is the special proclamation presented to Tom Taylor:
